During Restoration

The restoration project included returning the enclosed patio to this paved terrace, which was the builder's vision. This home was meant to incorporate the gardens in its flow, and so much of the restoration accomplishes this.

Here the rock wall has been restored to its original condition, using native Arizona rock, a matter of importance to builder and original resident, Frank B. Wallace.
Before Phoenicians had ever heard of 'Koi ponds,' the Wallaces had built this "rock bordered pool for water plants and gold fish." Without damaging the original design, new technology for keeping the pool clean and healthy is installed and cleverly hidden from view.

Keeping with the design to include the gardens in the home's living spaces, the outside concrete was stained to talk to the living room's concrete floor acid stain patina.
Brick pavers had been embedded in a piece of the back garden. The look was so charming, so complementary to the Cotswold Cottage, that the Atens replicated the complicated pattern to complete the back patio.
While refurbishing the back sleeping porch, which now serves as a master suite sitting room, the Atens had the good fortune to obtain original slate that remained behind after another historic home was distroyed by fire, and used it in this area of the house.
